10.Dezember 2016

On December 10, 2016, the annual commemoration of the adoption the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Amnesty International will screen two free documentaries exploring related subjects.

Held from 14.00-18:00 at the Neues Rottmann Kino, the event will also feature Q&A sessions with the two directors
The first is the Forgotten Sex Slaves: Comfort Women in the Philippines.

Directed by Björn Jensen it examines the horrific treatment of thousands of women, many of them still teenagers, in Asia during the Second World War. Forced to work as prostitutes, they were raped, beaten and abused. The Japanese military called them ianfu (comfort women). After the war, the survivors hide what they consider a “shame.” After holding silence for more than 50 years, they have commenced to tell their tales. The intimate, touching film tells the story of nine Philippine women and their efforts to find justice before they die. Running time is 46 minutes and the film is in Tagalog/English with English subtitles.

Water is one of the basic necessities of life, so when the indigenous Wayúu people in Tamaquito, Columbia are coerced off their ancestral land by mining conglomerates with promises of new housing they were surprised to find drinking water was not part of the deal. Cerrejón, the mining company and its international stakeholders, reneged on promises specified in the contract. Now the villagers, housed in a hot, dry location far from forests and rivers, find a severe long drought is endangering their very existence.
The film Colombia: La Buene Vida – The Good Life is directed by Jens Schanze and runs for 1hr 37 min. (English subtitles)

Entrance to the Human Rights Film Day is free, though donations to continue the work of Amnesty International are gratefully accepted.
